DESCRIPTION:Martinmas/Lantern Walk \n\nNovember 11 marks Martinmas\, in ho
nor of a Roman soldier elevated to sainthood for his selfless kindness. Ma
rtin is the patron saint of the poor\, beggars\, outcasts\, and the homele
ss. He is known for his gentleness\, his unassuming nature\, and his abili
ty to bring warmth and light to those who were previously in darkness. On
the evening of Martinmas\, Martin’s deeds of goodness and acts of kindness
are remembered with singing and a Festival of Lanterns. Children in presc
hool-kindergarten and the younger grades\, together with teachers and fami
lies\, carry handmade lanterns as they walk into the cold\, dark evening s
inging songs. A story recognizing “the light” of another gives the childre
n an experience of caring and sharing as we move toward the darkness of wi
nter. The older grades may do outreach projects in celebration of the spir
 it of St. Martin.

DESCRIPTION:\n\nMichaelmas\n\n\nMichaelmas is not just a day\; it is a seas
on that extends from September 29\, the Feast of St. Michael\, to October
31\, All Hallows Eve. It is a time for celebrating deeds of strength and c
ourage\, for facing dragons\, external and internal. It is a time for harv
est\, a time for work\, a time for storing away that which we need for the
cold dark months to come.\n\n\nWaldorf School on the Roaring Fork celebra
tes Michaelmas in many ways. Facing challenges and preparing for the winte
r is the common theme. It has become traditional for the grade students to
present a Michaelmas play about St. George and the Dragon. Another tradit
ion is the serving of a hearty vegetable soup that grades students' famili
es have contributed to and the Faculty has prepared\, including potatoes f
rom our own school garden. Our Michaelmas celebration has evolved over the
years as we strive to make it a meaningful and living experience for all
our students\, young and old. Michaelmas is also observed in the classroom
with stories\, verses\, and music containing themes of courage\, inner st
 rength\, will\, and deeds of goodness.\n\n\n\n
